Five of Cups

In shortA real loss — and you are only counting what you lost.

Upright

grieflossregretmourning what spilledpartial disappointment

Something is gone and grieving it is the correct response. This card sits with loss and regret honestly. But it is precise about the arithmetic: three things spilled, two still standing — and you cannot see what remains from where you are looking.

Reversed

acceptanceturning aroundmoving onforgiveness

You turn around. Acceptance arrives, what is left gets noticed, and forgiving yourself or someone else becomes possible. This is one of the more hopeful reversals in the deck: the grief has done its work and is starting to let go.

In the pictureA cloaked figure faces three fallen cups; behind him, unnoticed, two stand upright. A bridge crosses the river to a castle — the way home exists and is not far. His head is bowed; he has not turned.

The turn

Grieve it properly, then turn around and count what is still standing.
