Four of Swords

In shortStop. Rest properly.

Upright

restrecoveryretreatdeliberate stillnessconvalescence

This is rest you actually need — not defeat, but the recovery that makes carrying on possible. It follows heartbreak and it is the correct response to it. Retreat, contemplation, sick leave, the sleep you keep postponing. Nothing needs deciding today.

Reversed

restlessnessreturning too soonburnoutforced stop

Rest is being refused or forced on you. Restlessness that will not allow stillness, going back to work before you have healed, or a stop imposed by collapse rather than chosen. It can also mean a retreat is over and it is time to re-enter the world.

In the pictureA knight lies in effigy on a tomb, hands in prayer. Three swords hang above him; one lies beneath — the fight is set down but not far away. A stained glass window shows a figure receiving a blessing. He is not dead; he is resting.

The turn

Book the actual rest. Put it in the calendar as a commitment, not a gap.
