The Fool

In shortA fresh start you have not taken yet.

Something in your life is new, and you have not done it before — that is the whole point of this card. The Fool is the moment just before you begin, when nothing has gone wrong because nothing has happened yet. It is asking you to start without knowing how it turns out, because doing it is the only way to find out. There is real risk here and the card does not pretend otherwise. It just thinks staying where you are is the bigger risk.

You are stuck at the starting line, and it is worth working out which kind of stuck. Either you are hesitating — running through everything that could go wrong instead of beginning. Or you already jumped without thinking it through, and now you are dealing with the consequences. The fix is opposite in each case, so be honest about which one you are doing. This card can also mean a fresh start you keep planning and never begin, because planning it feels safer than risking it.

In the pictureThe white sun behind him, the white rose of pure intent in his hand, and the small dog — instinct — barking at his heel. His bundle is tiny: he carries almost nothing. Note that the cliff edge is real; the card does not pretend otherwise.

The turn

Take the first small irreversible step. Not the whole journey — the step that makes turning back inconvenient.
