Three of Swords

In shortIt hurts, and the hurt is accurate.

Upright

heartbreakpainful truthbetrayalgriefnecessary hurt

This is heartbreak caused by the truth — the thing said, the thing found out, the loss that words made real. The card offers no comfort about the pain, but it is clean: this is grief rather than confusion, and grief resolves in a way that confusion does not.

Reversed

beginning to healthe worst passingreleasing paina wound reopened

The sharpest part is passing. Healing begins, the pain becomes bearable, or you finally stop deliberately reopening it. Less often it means a wound being nursed past its natural life, or a hurt you have not let yourself feel at all yet.

In the pictureThree swords pierce a single red heart against grey rain. No figure, no landscape, nothing to soften it — the most abstract image in the deck. The rain will pass; the image includes weather, which changes.

The turn

Let it hurt on purpose for a defined time. Suppressed grief takes longer.
